Luna Negra -
Soundproof DemoReview by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com)
Mustache Ministry Records
Release date: 2009
What I like most about the stoner rock bands that are popping up from the former Eastern Bloc is the reverence they bring to the genre. You won't find too many groups that are setting the world afire with originality (although there are some), but by and large they all have a firm understanding on how to make a song work.
Polish instrumental four-piece Luna Negra is no exception. Their
Soundproof Demo isn't a game changer in terms of what stoner rock represents, but throughout the course of its five tracks, the band proves that they've not only done their homework in Kyuss 101 but also graduated with high marks. Tracks like “Echo” (the best of the lot) and “Night Time Women” (the most intricate) follow in the footsteps of the greats, but rarely does the band get completely lost in their shadows. I'm not entirely sure all instrumental is the way to go, but on the other hand, the best voice would be John Garcia's, and that would have the unintentional side effect of making them more Kyussy than they already are.
Essentially, rather than reinvent it, Luna Negra simply retreads the wheel. Mileage may vary, but they're definitely taking you farther than expected.
